Cijin Tian Sheng Temple – A Story of Faith and Devotion

Located on Cijin Island in Kaohsiung, Tian Sheng Temple is a sacred site dedicated to the Heavenly Mother, Mazu, along with the Thirteen Marshals and Marshal Chung. The temple's origins trace back to 1982, when local schoolteacher Mr. Chung Yong-Liang and his wife, Mrs. Chen Zi-Rong, began worshipping Mazu in their home. At the time, Mrs. Chen was suffering from mysterious health issues. A respected elder advised that Mazu was calling her to serve as a spirit medium. After agreeing, Mrs. Chen recovered and began her spiritual journey with Mazu.
Following 49 days of spiritual training at a temple on Xiao Liuqiu Island, Mrs. Chen became a full medium. Mazu’s statue was installed at the teacher dormitory in Cijin Elementary School. As devotion grew, Mazu instructed the community to build a proper temple. The site was chosen in 1990, and the permanent temple began construction in 2002.
Mr. Chung passed away during this time and was later honored as “Marshal Chung,” becoming a guardian deity of the temple. In 2004, Mazu was ceremoniously enshrined in the newly completed temple. Today, Tian Sheng Temple stands as a symbol of compassion, faith, and local devotion on Cijin Island.
